Future of HR • Opinion

The future of HR might actually be… less HR.

Not less care. Not less rigour. Not less protection for people or businesses. Less HR doing everything.

The future of HR might actually be less HR

For years, HR has gradually become the place where almost every uncomfortable people conversation gets handed over.

Poor performance? Call HR. Someone’s off sick again? Call HR. Two people have fallen out? Call HR. Need to give difficult feedback? Call HR.

And somewhere along the way, managers can become less confident doing the very thing management is supposed to involve: managing people.

I think the future looks different.

AI will absolutely take some of the admin, drafting and process-heavy work away. Policies will become easier to access. Data will get better. Routine questions will be answered faster.

But the part businesses will still need humans for is the messy bit.

Judgement. Context. Courageous conversations. Understanding what’s actually happening rather than simply what the policy says should happen.

Perhaps good HR shouldn’t create dependence on HR. Perhaps good HR should make businesses better at people.

That changes the HR model too.

Not every growing business needs a full HR department. What they do need is managers who can manage — and access to experienced HR support when something is complex, sensitive, risky or simply outside their comfort zone.

That means the best HR support may increasingly look less like owning every conversation and more like building manager capability, creating sensible frameworks and being available when judgement really matters.

And that is exactly why People, Properly exists.

I don’t want to become the person managers send every people problem to. I’d rather help them understand it, deal with it confidently and know when something genuinely needs specialist support.

For SMEs, that can be a far more practical model than building a full internal HR function too early: capable managers, good foundations and experienced support when you actually need it.

For growing businesses

Need experienced HR support without building a full HR function?

That’s exactly what People, Properly is for — practical, commercially minded help when a people issue needs proper judgement.
